[Group Activity Analytics] /analytics/group_activity/merge_requests_count API exceeds target duration

In Kibana over the past 7 days, GET /api/:version/analytics/group_activity/merge_requests_count has exceeded the target duration of 5 second hundreds times.

We need to improve this to respond in less than 5 seconds.
