Your work sidebar
Release notes
While using GitLab, you may have noticed that some pages don't have a left sidebar. These pages are primarily user-orientated pages such as your activity page or your activity, todo's, or snippets. Not having a left sidebar on those pages creates a very inconsistent experience with GitLab.
In this release, we've added a new Your Work sidebar to add consistency and a dedicated place in our navigation for the things you are working on.
This new sidebar paves the way for our new navigation Super Sidebar, where the top navigation will move into the left sidebar. Right now, it includes your issues, MRs, and todos, but we'll be making more exciting updates over time!
Problem to solve
- As a user it's hard to find my way back from the Activity Page or other global pages.
Proposal
- Create a navigation experience that is tailored to these pages and groups globally-specific items in one place
- This is a HAML persistent sidebar, we have another issue for the Vue persistent sidebar in the new navigation
- Deliver this to users ahead of the new navigation so they can get the benefits of the sidebar on the pages that don't have them and set the stage for our new navigation when it is released.
