For some reason when I originally wrote this I was using a mix of
xbindkeys and xmodmap and assigning F keys in XFCE, etc.  None of that
is necessary, xbindkeys can do it all itself and no relying on the
deprecated xmodmap or setting up keyboard mappings in your desktop
environment.
