Rewrite confusing wildcard docs

This reverts the documentation change on pages_external_url made by @vshushlin (intended as clarification, for me: causing confusion) and tries to rewrite/copy the clarfication gist without breaking the widely referred and documented example.io domain as basis for the Gitlab Pages deployment.
