Make specs more consistent with each other

Jeremy Jackson requested to merge jj-improve-spec-consistency into master

This just kind of cleans up the specs, and removes the usage of the class level .run usage in specs. This part is intentional, because the plan is to remove it for 0.5.0. I don't believe it's been used within gitlab, so there are no plans to deprecate it, but that's what we would normally want to do.
